Backpacks Please review the papers in your child’s backpack each day. Papers will include PTA flyers, teacher notes, and student work. It is important to review student work with your child. This type of sharing allows your child to demonstrate his/her knowledge, helps to keep you informed of classroom activities, and offers an opportunity to praise your child.
Paper Books Your child will bring home a pre-decodable or decodable paper book every week. Please have your child read these books to you at home. This extra reading practice is important for reading development. It is a nice idea to use a bag or other container in which to keep your paper book collection.
Recess Always send your child to school dressed appropriately for outdoor play. We generally go out for recess daily unless it is extremely cold or it’s raining.
Field Trips Field trips are planned to coincide with our curriculum. A field trip permission form will be sent home prior to all field trips. Three parents usually accompany the class as chaperones on each trip. The homeroom parent coordinates the adults that attend. This year we will be visiting Simmons Farm in the fall to experience the "Farm to Home" process and in the spring we will enhance our art and music curriculum with a visit to the Frick Art and Historical Museum.
Student Absences A written excuse is needed within 3 days of an absence. In addition, please call the Safewalk line the morning of your child’s absence.
School Drop-off Parents are welcome to walk your child to the classroom during the first full week of school. After the first full week of school, please have your child enter the classroom on his or her own. This encourages independence in the students and allows me to focus on the children as they enter.
Birthdays It is a school policy not to send in edible birthday treats because of food allergies. We will celebrate your child’s birthday by reading one of his/her favorite books. Non-edible treats like pencils or stickers can be distributed if students would like. I will select a school day later in the year to celebrate each summer birthday.
News/Show & Tell Early in the year, four students are selected each day to share news. Later in the year each student will take home the Super Sack to bring in “show and tell” items to share.
Parties Parent volunteers should sign up with the homeroom parent to help with parties.
Dismissal If you need to change the location of where you pick your child up at dismissal or to change the usual pickup person, it is best to send me a note the morning of or email me the day before.
Toys Please do not allow your child to bring toys from home. It is very difficult for a child if a toy gets broken or lost, and it is difficult for other children if they are not allowed to play with something another child brings in. The toys in the classroom have been selected to provide the students with particular academic objectives and with opportunities for important lessons in sharing and taking turns.
Conferences Parent-teacher conferences take place at the end of the semester in early February. At the conference I will share samples of your child’s work and discuss his or her progress. If you have questions or concerns prior to the conference or at any time of the year, please contact me directly at kauslander@mtlsd.net.
Guest Readers In the spring a notice will be sent home for each child to invite a guest reader, usually a family member, to come in to read to the class. All guest readers will come in the spring, rather than on your child’s birthday.
Open House Please watch for information on the date and time for the evening Open House at Washington School this spring. It is a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to come to school in the evening to see the classrooms and the other areas of the school. It is a chance for your child to show you around the classroom and to “show off” all of his or her schoolwork.
I look forward to partnering with you to make your child’s kindergarten year a big success!
